Pet therapy in schools has a wealth of benefits for students! It provides a unique opportunity for emotional support and stress relief. Interacting with animals doesn’t just lift up spirits, but also contributes to a positive learning environment.
Recently, students had the chance to meet some adorable bunnies, corgis and a chinchilla. To learn more about the positive effects of pet therapy (especially in the lead-up to exam season!) we chatted with school counsellor, Ms. Sacher.
How does pet therapy benefit our students?
It helps reduce anxiety, which is often why we have these sessions before exam seasons when stress is in the air. Studies have shown that animal therapy increases positive emotions, such as happiness, and even helps students focus with a clearer headspace. It also promotes social interaction; students get to take a break from technology and interact with their peers across all grade levels.
Have you noticed any trends in student responses to pet therapy?
One student approached me and expressed she was having a difficult day; but when she came down to pet therapy in the drama room, it really changed the course of her afternoon. She was very thankful
Which animals are students most drawn to?
They seemed to interact most with the rabbits! They had a chance to hold and brush them. They also enjoyed playing cognitive snack-searching games with the pigs, which kept them busy. The chinchilla was also popular. They loved rocking him to sleep.
Thank you, Ms. Sacher!
